Kamila Valieva, the 15-year-old figure skater at the heart of a doping scandal in Beijing, is on course to win another gold medal after being cleared to continue competing by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Competing in the women's singles short program on Tuesday, Valieva, who is representing the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), finished first in the figure skating making her the leader going into Thursday's free skate competition.
Despite a stumble in her routine, the teenager received a high score of 82.16 for her performance, tearing up after she finished.
Just four days after guiding the ROC to gold in the team figure skating team event competition on February 7, it was revealed by the International Testing Agency (ITA) that Valieva had tested positive for the prohibited substance trimetazidine while competing at the Russian national championships in Saint Petersburg last year.
She was immediately banned by Russia's anti-doping agency (RUSADA), however the decision was overturned following a swift appeal.
On Monday, CAS then upheld the decision to reverse Valieva's ban, paving the way for her to perform in the singles short program.
While currently in the lead, however, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said Monday that Valieva will not receive a medal even if she places in the top three until her case is closed.
The IOC also said that there would be no medal ceremony, meaning all top the finishers will have to wait for a definitive end to Valieva's case before receiving their medals.
"Should Ms. Valieva finish amongst the top three competitors in the Women's Single Skating competition, no flower ceremony and no medal ceremony will take place during the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022," the IOC's statement said.
